WHAT IS FSSAI?

India's mandatory food safety licence

FSSAI — the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India — is the government body that regulates food businesses across the country. Any entity that manufactures, processes, stores, distributes, or sells food must hold a valid FSSAI license or registration.

Operating a food business without FSSAI invites penalties up to ₹5 lakh, imprisonment, and forced closure. More practically, food aggregators like Zomato, Swiggy, and Amazon Fresh require a valid FSSAI number before onboarding any food seller.

Legal Compliance

Operate your food business with full legal standing under the Food Safety Act, 2006.

Zomato & Swiggy Listing

Food aggregators mandate a valid FSSAI number to onboard restaurants and cloud kitchens.

Consumer Trust

Display your 14-digit FSSAI number on all packaging — signals quality and safety to customers.

Export & Import

Mandatory for importing or exporting food products to and from India.

Bank Loan Access

Banks and NBFCs request FSSAI license for food sector business loans and credit facilities.

Avoid Heavy Penalties

Fines up to ₹5 lakh and business closure for operating without a valid license.

LICENSE TYPES

Which FSSAI license does your business need?

FSSAI has three tiers based on your annual turnover and business type. Filing under the wrong tier causes rejection — we ensure you get it right.

TIER 1

Basic Registration

Annual Turnover Up to ₹12 Lakh

For petty food vendors, small home-based food businesses, and tiny retailers with minimal turnover.

  • Petty food retailers & street vendors
  • Home-based food makers (tiffin, bakers)
  • Temporary stalls & food carts
  • Small dabba / lunch delivery services
Govt. Fee: ₹100/year
Apply for Basic
TIER 3

Central License

Annual Turnover Above ₹20 Crore

For large manufacturers, importers, exporters, and food businesses operating across multiple states.

  • Large food manufacturers & exporters
  • Food importers (mandatory)
  • Multi-state food chains & FBOs
  • Central government canteens
  • Airports, seaports, railway units
Govt. Fee: ₹7,500 – ₹10,000/year
Apply for Central

Not sure which tier applies to you? Turnover-based classification sounds simple — but special categories like cold storage, dairy, and importers have additional rules. Our experts will tell you exactly which license to apply for. Ask us for free →

FREQUENTLY ASKED

FSSAI questions we answer every day

Yes. Any person or entity engaged in food preparation or sale — including home bakers, tiffin operators, and online food sellers — must have FSSAI registration. If your annual turnover is below ₹12 lakh, Basic Registration applies. Selling on Instagram, WhatsApp, or Swiggy without FSSAI exposes you to penalties.

For Basic Registration, you can register using your home address. You do not need a separate commercial kitchen. However, State and Central licenses require a food-safe premises and may involve a physical inspection. We guide you on what changes (if any) are needed before inspection.

FSSAI licenses are valid for 1 to 5 years — you choose the duration when applying (longer durations cost proportionally more). Basic Registration and State/Central Licenses must be renewed before expiry. Operating with an expired license attracts the same penalties as operating without one. We send renewal reminders well in advance.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, manufacturing or selling food without registration or license attracts a fine of up to ₹5 lakh. In cases of sub-standard or unsafe food, imprisonment of up to 6 years is also possible. Zomato, Swiggy, and Amazon Fresh will immediately delist businesses with expired or absent FSSAI numbers.

Yes. As your business grows and turnover crosses ₹12 lakh, you must apply for a State License. You cannot simply modify the Basic Registration — a new application under the State License category is required. We handle the migration smoothly, including documenting your updated turnover and business size.

Yes. For packaged food products, the 14-digit FSSAI license number is mandatory on the label, along with the "FSSAI Approved" declaration. This applies to manufactured, processed, and repackaged goods. Non-compliance with labelling rules is a separate offence under FSSAI regulations and can attract additional fines.

Each business premises requires its own FSSAI license. A restaurant chain with 5 outlets across different cities needs a separate license for each outlet. However, a Central License covers all establishments of the same business entity across India under one license number. We advise you on the most cost-effective structure.
